This just in. The US military found a pipeline carrying oil from Iraq to Syria. They have shut it off. What was that about the embargo?

Speaking of embargoes. Defenders of Castro point to the US embargo as the cause of Cuban impoverishment. This does not factor in French cultivation of Fidel, and the swift recognition of Castro by many Latin American countries after Argentina forced the US to choose sides in the Falklands-Malvinas War in the early '80's. And of course there are the Canadians to figure in there.

Why sanctions don't work. Somebody will always go around the sanctions. And any problems can be blamed on the sanctions. The US should lift the sanctions against Fidel.

Fascism. A Mind That Suits asked yesterday why people spoke of the fall of Communism, as opposed to the fall of European Communism, since Communism itself is doing quite well all over the world, although its victimes aren't. Same thing with Fascism. The Ba'ath party was formed as an Arab form of Nazism. It still holds power in Syria. The Austrian "Free Party," successor to the local party which collaborated in the absorption of Austria into the Reich, continually holds the balance of power in the Austrian parliament, though its actual support remains in the 'teens. Italy still has its Fascist party. Adolf Hitler is an object of veneration throughout the Arab world.

German fascism was defeated. Fascism was not.
