When Confidence is Foolishness. One comment stays with the mind from yesterday's Journal article on why Americans are so obsessed with risk. A scientist commented that it was difficult to speak about probabilities with people "who assume they are going to win."
Several months ago, a prominent conservative writer who has been a guest professor at several elite campuses over the last few years, wrote a very perceptive article about the current crop of students, and how much fun he had had talking to them. The one thing that bothered him was an air they brought to every situation: that they could handle it, whatever it is. Washington, DC, is a town full of such people, and has been for a very long time. The only way to have that kind of success is to so control your environment that no surprises crop up. But they always do. It makes one wonder what the emotional impact on such people is when life reminds them that it cannot be controlled, particularly among the coming generation, who have very little experience of real trouble.
