Thursday, August 07, 2003 :::
As of this afternoon, it appears that we are closing in on Saddam Hussein. I hope this drags out for a while, so he can feel the fear that he induced in his own people for so many years. One suspects this is more of a cat and mouse game that even our confident military is letting on. The cameramen tried to make it look more emotional than it was, but the funeral of Uday and Qusay was more pathetic than can be imagined: if there were 40 people there, I would be surprised. While this blog and many others continue to be concerned about the reconstruction of Iraq, it must be said clearly that in ridding Iraq of Saddam, we did a good and blessed thing. Iraqis have their own plans for the future of Iraq, and the role of the US is going to be difficult to negotiate. But no one should doubt for a minute that the Iraqi people are overwhelming happy to be rid of one of the 20th Century's greatest monsters.
