Interesting thought. The previous blog mentions bustling Wilmington without mentioning North Carolina, and A Mind That Suits finds that whenever he mentions Wilmington, people assume Delaware. It turns out that Wilmington, NC, is slightly larger, and there are, so far as he knows, no major television shows produced in Delaware. Why do people assume Wilmington, Delaware? Is it the age of the town, the fact that they have to memorize it in elementary school, or the fact that several major national corporations are incorporated there, so that paychecks and corporate statements bear its name?
Strange but true.
Ah, but a certain pudgy, balding English teacher just realized that the name that children must memorize, if they go to a real school, is "Dover, Delaware," not Wilmington. Oops. Now there is a city few ever have to think about.
